Nageshwar Temple - Pune Attractions | Places Near By Pune

Nageshwar temple is one of the oldest temple of Lord Shiva,which dates back to almost 13th century, the times of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram.The temple is located in Nagesh Peth, which was previously known as Nahal Peth.the temple is built in the typical Yadava style with stone roof and has undergone several renovations during the years.

History of Temple:
The temple belongs to the times of Saint Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram.But the renovation(jeernoddhar) of the temple was done in 1730.The temple has been constructed in the Peshwai style.the temple has an assembly hall whose top has been made in the 'nagara' style, from gypsum, lime and plaster.There are devkoshtas (aedicules) on the temple walls with idols of deities placed inside.The sanctuary of the temple is a swayambhu Shivalinga.

Speciality of Temple:
There is a belief that there was once a (kunda)reservoir near the temple.The speciality of this reservoir was that the water of this reservoir could cure leprosy.People during that times used to visit the Nageshwar temple before going to the Gangas in Banaras and after returning used to deposit the holy water of Ganga in this reservoir.
